I ordered this to update a decade (plus) old paper shredder with an 8-sheet-per-pass limit. My first impressions were that it was both well-designed and well-made. The quality is apparent in every regard, and the manufacturer certainly cut no corners in production. The features offer more than most paper shredders in this price range, and although it is simple to figure out and use, I suggest doing as I did and reading through the manual thoroughly. I began with single pieces of thin cardboard junk mail and noticed that the pieces were inconsistent in shredding speed. The hesitancy was noticeable when feeding the unit, but it did an acceptable job (the noise level was also quieter than my other shredder). As I did not wish to overwork/overrun the shredder on its first use, I set a timer to 5 minutes (the time touted in the product description and user guide before it overheats). Near the end, I began shredding more documents, but none were close to the allowable number of 10. Around the 4-minute mark, I placed four sheets of paper into the shredder, and the unit continued running when they passed through the unit. Unsure of what was happening, I turned it to reverse and back to “Auto,” but it still did not turn off. I had to switch it off manually. I also, unfortunately, detected a burning smell. During this time, the unit never went into overheating mode (red light), so it was okay as I was still under 5 minutes (and never fed the shredder continuously). The only thing I can think of is that the basket was getting too full, but I do not understand why reversing and forwarding did not reset the unit to its auto-sensing function. I did not attempt to shred any credit cards, CDs/DVDs, or staples, but it does offer the option and can do so. One of the best features is its dedicated entry for disc shredding (an excellent addition and option). Time will be the ultimate test (as well as shredding more than paper), but for now, I am giving it a 4.5 out of 5 (rounding up since Amazon does not allow half ratings). For those who need a reliable and straightforward way to keep unwanted and old mail in check, I believe it is a favorable option to consider for the price and is a product capable of handling basic shredding needs, such as junk mail and mail of a private nature, on a routine basis. 4.5/5 [...]
